ASHRAE, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers is an international organization of 50,000 persons with chapters throughout the world. The Society is organized for the sole purpose of advancing the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration for the public's benefit through research, standards writing, continuing education and publications.

ASHRAE is a research-based society in the States. Their research achievements are regularly complied and printed in the ASHRAE handbooks and technical bulletins. Members could benefit the advance technology from the ASHRAE Society.

The ASHRAE Hong Kong Chapter was founded in 1984 and is one of the large Chapters in ASHRAE. There are thirteen regions and one region-at-large in ASHRAE over the world. The Hong Kong Chapter is within the Region XIII which is the first Far East region out of the States.

The vision of ASHRAE is to promote "Technology for a Better Environment" and to be the international organization on technology development in the Heating, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning. The Hong Kong Chapter follows the global vision of ASHRAE that provides different technical seminars and workshops to let members globally broaden their knowledge to suit the Society's needs.

Locally, ASHRAE Hong Kong Chapter has been keeping a close and harmonious relationship with other professional institutions, namely Hong Kong Institution of Engineers [Building Services Division] and Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers [Hong Kong Branch] for many years. Most of the technical talks, visits and even the annual symposium are jointly organized by these parties.

Vision

The CIBSE has the visions of promoting the art, science and practice of building services engineering for the benefit of all, and the advancement of education and research in building services engineering.

The Institution has two main functions:

1. It confers an internationally recognized badge of quality;

2. It undertakes a wide range of learned society activities ranging from producing information services and acknowledged industry good practice publications in its series of Guides and other publications, to running a wide range of events, and to providing extensive networking activities through a series of regional and special interest groups.

Introduction

The Hong Kong Branch (HKB) is one of the largest CIBSE regions and has about 2,400 members. CIBSE HKB represents CIBSE in Hong Kong, especially with respect to membership development, public image and co-ordination with other learned societies in Hong Kong. The HK Branch also administers the grant from Headquarters for the interest of CIBSE members in Hong Kong and conducts professional review interviews and training assessment in Hong Kong on behalf of Headquarters.

The HK Branch organizes appropriate activities for and provides membership or training advice to CIBSE members in Hong Kong, but also advises, assists and monitors the learned society functions organized jointly with Building Services Division of HKIE, Hong Kong Chapter of ASHRAE for CIBSE members in Hong Kong.

Future Plan

Since May 2004, CIBSE has opened its doors to a much wider range of corporate members, with changes to its membership criteria. The new rules mean that corporate membership will be based on candidates reaching CIBSE’s professional competence standard. As a result, CIBSE will be able to attract new corporate members who, although academically qualified and experienced in building services, do not meet the Engineering Council’s narrow academic requirements. This move reflects the growing diversity of the building services, the changing role of services engineers and a more outward looking Institution.
